Learning to sail, slowly

I signed up for lessons on a whim. I am now the slowest student the club has ever had, and I am fine with that.

There is a small sailing club on the river that will teach anyone who shows up on a Saturday. I showed up in May. I have been showing up since.

I grew up two hours from the coast and never learned. The wind was something that happened to other people. Now it is the only thing I think about for three hours a week.

What I like about it is how little of it is in your control. You cannot make the wind do anything. You can only notice what it is doing and adjust. That turns out to be most of product management, and most of everything else.

I capsized once, in July, in front of a ferry. The instructor said it was the best thing that could have happened. I am choosing to believe him.

I have no plans to buy a boat. I have every plan to keep showing up.
